Transcription: The Marine Corps War Memorial, popularly called the Iwo Jima Memorial, stands on high ground in Arlington overlooking the Potomac and the city of Washington. Its design is based on a Pulitzer Prize photo by Joe Rosenthal. It portrays Marines victoriously raising the American flag after the hard-fought battle for the Pacific island of Iwo Jima in 1945.
